KOBI-TV NBC 5 is the NBC affiliate serving Southern Oregon and Northern California. The site runs entirely on WordPress, with a fully custom theme and a suite of custom plugins built specifically for newsroom workflows.

Infrastructure built for unpredictable traffic

Most WordPress sites can’t handle a real traffic spike. This one runs on AWS ECS with auto-scaling containers, an Aurora MySQL cluster for the database, and Memcached for object caching. When a breaking story hits, the site scales horizontally without manual intervention. Through 14+ years of unpredictable news cycles, uptime has stayed at 99.9%.

Custom-built for the newsroom

Beyond the infrastructure, the site supports a content team of 30+ contributors with custom editorial tools, role-based permissions, breaking-news alerts, video embedding, and integrations with broadcast systems.

I’ve owned every layer of the platform since 2011: the WordPress theme, the custom plugins, the AWS infrastructure, the Aurora database, the caching layer, and the publishing tools the newsroom uses every day. No team handoffs, no offshore support, no “that’s not my department.”
